In 1937, while leading a seminary declared illegal by the Nazis, the German pastor and theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote one of his most famous books: The Cost of Discipleship. In the book, he describes two types of Christianity: one that preaches cheap grace and the other that preaches costly grace. He warns that “cheap grace is the mortal enemy of the church. Our struggle today is for costly grace.” This morning, we will consider what cheap grace looks like in our context and how we can practice costly grace.
