The Sarum Prayer

God be in my head—and in my understanding
God be in my eyes—and in my looking
God be in my mouth—and in my speaking
God be in my heart—and in my thinking
God be at my end—and at my departing

Breath Meditation Practice

Take some deep breaths: In through the nose, out through the mouth, three at least or more. As your mind wanders, return your focus to the breath. If you like, try placing one or both hands over your heart as you do this.

Psalm Portion for the Week

Psalm 91: 1–2

Those who dwell in the shelter of the Most High
And abide in the shade of the Almighty
Say to the Lord, “My refuge,
My stronghold, my God in whom I trust!”

Words of the Followers Portion

And look: On that very day two of them were journeying to a village sixty stadia away from Jerusalem, the name of which was Emmaus, and they were talking with each other about all these events. And it happened that, as they talked and debated, Jesus himself approached and journeyed along with then; but their eyes were constrained so as not to recognize them. (Luke 24: 13–16, David Bentley Hart)

Prayer for Loved Ones

Devote a minute to naming your loved ones, thus presenting them in love before the one who is Love.

Serenity Prayer

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
courage to change the things I can,
and wisdom to know the difference.

Gratitude Practice

“Whatever may be the tensions and stresses of a particular day, there is always lurking close at hand the trailing beauty of forgotten joy or unremembered peace” —Howard Thurman

Lord, grant me an awareness of the trailing beauty of those moments of forgotten joy and unremembered peace and help me to dwell on them as windows into the divine realm. Amen.

Take a few moments to identify three things you are thankful for: whatever comes to mind. Jot them down or call them to mind.

Closing Sarum Prayer

God be in my head—and in my understanding
God be in my eyes—and in my looking
God be in my mouth—and in my speaking
God be in my heart—and in my thinking
God be at my end—and at my departing

Benediction

Go in peace, wash your hands, love your neighbor, you are not alone!
