The Sarum Prayer
God be in my head—and in my understanding
God be in my eyes—and in my looking
God be in my mouth—and in my speaking
God be in my heart—and in my thinking
God be at my end—and at my departing
Breath Meditation Practice
Take three to seven nice-and-easy, deep breaths: In through the nose, out through the mouth. Simply focus on what feels like to breathe in and out like this.
Psalm Portion
God is our refuge and strength,
a very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change,
though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea;
Though its waters roar and foam,
though the mountains tremble with its tumult.
There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
the holy habitation of the Most High.
God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be moved;
God will help it when the morning dawns.
The nations are in an uproar, the kingdoms totter;
God utters God’s voice, the earth melts.
The LORD of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our refuge.
Words of Jesus Portion
Jesus, when a blind man named Bartimaeus called out to him from the roadside, to his disciples said, “Call him,” and to the man, “What would you have me do for you?” Jesus, when Bartimaeus asked for his sight to be restored said, “Receive your sight and go your way, for your faith has made you whole.” (Mark 10: 51–52)
Prayer for Loved Ones
Take a minute or two (more if you like) to simply name your loved ones.
In this kind of prayer, we simply name them as a way to lift each one to the love of God. You might name each loved one tied to one breath.
Serenity Prayer
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
courage to change the things I can,
and wisdom to know the difference.
Gratitude Practice
For the many blessings of this day, we are thankful. Lord make us mindful. For each person we love, we are thankful. Lord make us mindful. For each person who loves us, we are thankful. Lord make us mindful.
Take a few moments to identify three things that you are thankful for: big, little, no matter, small delights, whatever comes to mind. Jot them down or call them to mind.
Closing Sarum Prayer
God be in my head—and in my understanding
God be in my eyes—and in my looking
God be in my mouth—and in my speaking
God be in my heart—and in my thinking
God be at my end—and at my departing
Benediction
Go in peace: wash your hands, love your neighbor, we are not alone.
